Charlie and The Chocolate Factory

This version stars Johhny Depp and was made by Tim Burton whose previous collaborations with Depp include Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas to name but a few. Other worthy credits for Burton alone include 2 Batman movies and Beetlejuice (with Michael Keaton who was considered for the role of Willy Wonka along with Steve Martin, Robin Williams, Christopher Walken and Nicolas Cage before it was awarded to Johhny Depp. The film score was done by Danny Elfman who interesting enough was the singing voice (according to the credits) for the Oompa-loompas (again forgive the spelling!) who amazingly all looked the same! Overall the film was very well done, Depp has a great way of becoming a character with a certain quirky charm and the supporting cast were excellent also. The role of Charlie was played by Freddie Highmore who played alongside Depp in the role of Peter in Finding Neverland (bugged us for the first 10-minutes of the movie until I remember it). As with all of Tim Burton's creations, the movie was colourful (note the spelling! ha!) and original. The only deviation of note was the ending which Burton clearly made his own and the introduction of Doctor Wonka (Willy's Father) played by Christopher Lee. Overall I really enjoyed it and I'd give it a rating of 8 out of 10. Definitely worth watching!

I actually really liked it. In the end, I think it might be safe to say even more than the original... and thats alot to say, considering that the Gene Wilder version was always a childhood favorite (sadly, I even know all the words to all the songs).
Besides the wonderful Burtonesque (you like that? I just made up a word!) visuals, the ultimate Burton/Depp/Elfman combo... and the very Oingo Boingo sounding Oompa Loompa music, I think what really set this one apart from the original was the overall message. Now mind you I've never read the book, so I have no idea what the message was meant to be... but instead of the whole stealing candy recipes conspiracy... Charlies family is the thread that holds Burton's story together. One thing I never liked about the original was the fact that the Grandpa was always a little dishonest... laying in bed for no good reason (Burton even made it a point to mention that HIS grandpa helped with the cleaning once he was up and about)... stealing that floating juice... having a bit of a temper.... there was just something about him. But Burton made you love Charlies family... made you want them all to have the reward in the end.
Thumbs up from me!
